Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are bringing Christopher Borgli’s film "The Drama" to home viewers, with the A24 release set to stream on HBO Max in the United States on July 31, after its theatrical debut in April. The story follows Emma and Charlie, an engaged couple in wedding preparations whose seemingly innocent social game leads to a shocking confession that upends their relationship and tests everything they thought they knew about each other.
Borgli said he never intended to make a standard wedding movie. He described the film as driven by his interest in how well people really know their partners, and what happens when one truth changes the entire picture. Although the premise sounds like a conventional romantic comedy, he told the cast he was aiming for something much darker and more unsettling.
According to production materials, Zendaya was the first to recognize the script’s potential and approached the filmmakers on her own, expressing strong interest in the role. She later said the script grabbed her immediately and that she could not predict where the story was going. She and Pattinson spent two weeks in rehearsals before filming, taking part in detailed discussions about the characters and plot, and some of their ideas were included in the final script.
To set the tone, Borgli screened films by Ingmar Bergman, Michael Haneke, and Lars von Trier for the cast, signaling that "The Drama" would be far from a typical Hollywood romance. The film also stars Alana Haim, Mamoudou Athie, Hailey Benton Gates, Zoë Winters, Anna Baryshnikov, and Sydney Lemon. It was produced for A24 by Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, and Tyler Campellone.
