President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Senate overnight, after it approved a resolution telling him to end the war with Iran or seek congressional approval to continue military activity in the Middle East. Trump said the move hurts the United States and strengthens Iran, which he described as the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism.
Writing on his Truth Social account, Trump said Iran was already “on the ropes,” ready to fall and surrender, and that for the first time in decades it was showing “tremendous respect” for the United States and its president, him. He accused senators of holding a “meaningless” and badly timed vote on the War Powers Act and said that by signaling Washington does not like what he is doing, “they just gave aid to the enemy.”
Trump also lashed out at four Republican senators who voted with Democrats. “Four loser Republicans voted with the Democrats, and Iran is asking my people, ‘What does this mean?’” he wrote, adding that the lawmakers had made his job harder, though “I will do it, one way or another, because I always finish the job.”
The Senate passed the resolution Tuesday night by 50 to 48. It had already cleared the House of Representatives earlier this month by a vote of 208 to 215 and was sent directly to the Senate floor for final approval. The four Republicans who broke party ranks were Rand Paul of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. The measure is declarative only and does not legally force Trump to act.
