England stayed top of Group J at the 2026 World Cup after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Ghana in Boston, but the match was overshadowed by a heated confrontation involving Jude Bellingham at halftime. The incident began after Bellingham fouled Jerome Opoku near the benches, prompting Ghana players and staff to demand a yellow card and escalating tensions as the teams headed down the tunnel.
British lip-reader Nicola Hickling said former Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv defender John Paintsil, now a Ghana assistant coach, told Bellingham, “Go f**k yourself, mate.” Carlos Queiroz then joined in with similar comments toward the Real Madrid midfielder. Morgan Rogers stepped in to pull Bellingham away, while Ghana staff tried to calm Queiroz.
Queiroz later said, “He had a bad reaction with some bad words.” He added that he had been trying to tell Bellingham to calm down after the challenge, saying the England player “went with his leg on my player,” and that his main concern was whether Opoku was fully fit. “He swore and that created more tension. It’s football, nothing special,” Queiroz said.
England coach Thomas Tuchel defended Bellingham, calling it “an exchange of emotions” and saying the midfielder “stood his ground.” Bellingham also tried to cool things down, saying: “It was after a stupid tackle by me ... the bench jumped and tried to get me a yellow.” He became the youngest player to reach 50 England caps, was substituted in the second half, and was named man of the match, a decision he disputed. England will clinch a place in the round of 32 if it avoids defeat to Panama on Saturday.
