The U.S. Senate approved a war powers resolution aimed at stopping President Donald Trump from continuing military action against Iran without congressional authorization. The vote was 50 to 48, and it marked the first time the Senate has passed such a measure after nine earlier attempts failed.
The resolution passed because four Republican senators joined Democrats in support. Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted against it. Although the move is not legally binding and is largely symbolic, it was widely seen as a significant political rebuke of Trump and his Iran policy.
The vote came amid growing criticism from Republican lawmakers over the war and over the deal Trump forged with Iran to end it. At the same time, the Pentagon asked Congress for an additional roughly $80 billion to cover war costs and replenish weapons stockpiles.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the war in Iran was "one of the most serious foreign policy mistakes in the history of the United States."
