Micah Nori, an assistant coach with Minnesota, is set to become the next head coach of Portland, the team of Israeli guard Deni Avdija. ESPN senior reporter Shams Charania reported Tuesday evening that the appointment is imminent.
Nori is widely regarded as one of the NBA’s top assistant coaches and has been on league coaching staffs since 2009. He will take over in Portland on a multi-year contract.
Portland general manager Joe Cronin conducted an extensive search that included interviews with more than 12 candidates. The final group, besides Nori, included Boston Celtics assistant Tyler Lashbrook and former interim coach Tiago Splitter.
Splitter had been hired by the Chicago Bulls last week, even after guiding the Trail Blazers to the playoffs. Portland now has a new coach in place for Avdija’s team after ending its relationship with Splitter.
