Lazio announced on Tuesday that Gennaro Gattuso has been hired as the club’s new manager, less than two months after he resigned as Italy’s national team coach. The former star midfielder is taking on a new role in his coaching career after his brief spell with the Azzurri ended in disappointment.
Gattuso stepped down after failing to lead Italy to the 2026 World Cup. It would have been the third straight World Cup that the reigning world champions of 2006 missed.
As a player, Gattuso retired in 2013 at Swiss side Sion after 13 straight seasons with AC Milan, where he became a club legend. During his coaching career, he has already managed Palermo, Milan, Napoli, Fiorentina, Valencia, Marseille and Hajduk Split.
Lazio’s announcement marks his next stop after the national-team setback, with the club now turning to one of Italian football’s best-known former players to lead its bench.
