Ultra-Orthodox protesters blocked the northbound lanes of Highway 6 on Tuesday near the Nitzanei Oz interchange. The disruption came a day before a large nationwide protest planned over the arrest of draft dodgers, or military deserters.
Kan News reported Monday night that police approved the protest organizers’ planned “car convoy” as part of the campaign. According to the organizers, the convoy is expected to depart from 19 locations across Israel.
Police set a condition that the mass convoys must not enter the military prison or the city of Kfar Yona, through which the access road to Prison 10 runs in the middle of town. Police said the restriction is meant to prevent clashes between residents and the ultra-Orthodox protesters.
Kfar Yona Mayor Albert Taieb told Kan News that he is organizing a blockade against the demonstration, which he described as a “human wall,” to stop the convoys from reaching the city.
