Meta is replacing the head of WhatsApp after seven years of stability at the top. Will Cathcart, who has led the messaging platform since 2019, is stepping down, and Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the change on Facebook on Monday.
His successor will be Kunal Shah, the Indian tech entrepreneur and founder of fintech company Cred. Shah will leave his active role as Cred’s chief executive to focus on running WhatsApp. Cathcart is not leaving Meta entirely, and will move into a new management role inside the company, though Meta has not yet fully described that position.
The move also deepens Meta’s ties to India. According to Bloomberg, the company will invest $900 million in Cred, taking a 20 percent stake in the startup. Cred’s app lets users pay bills and earn rewards and benefits for making payments through its system.
During Cathcart’s tenure, WhatsApp introduced several major changes, including end-to-end encrypted chat backups in 2021, expansion to iPad devices, advertising inside the service, and private AI-based conversations with Meta’s official bot, Meta AI. Zuckerberg praised Shah, saying he built Cred into one of India’s most important technology companies and brings a builder’s mindset and broad global outlook to the role.
