A Portuguese media storm erupted after Portugal drew 1-1 with Congo in the opening match of the World Cup, with a short clip and a fake quote about Cristiano Ronaldo spreading online. An Athletic opinion piece said the episode showed how Ronaldo can become a problem for Portugal “without even doing anything,” calling it a “dystopian” World Cup 2026 moment.
The controversy began when midfielder Joao Neves was asked about Ronaldo and the challenge of fitting him into a star-filled squad. Neves said, “We know what Cristiano Ronaldo has done for the national team and for world football. But right now I feel he is, like all of us, one of the guys. Just another player trying to help. He is no different from us and will contribute like all of us.” The article said this was a routine team-first answer, but social media clipped it into an apparent claim that Ronaldo was just an “ordinary player.”
According to the piece, the shortened video triggered angry reactions from Ronaldo fans, who flooded Neves’ Instagram posts and also attacked the accounts of Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha, demanding that teammates give Ronaldo the ball more and show him greater respect. The situation widened when Neves’ partner, Portuguese actress Madalena Aragao, was targeted too, and she had to limit comments on her posts.
A fake quote then spread online, falsely attributed to Aragao, saying fans should ask “your GOAT” to retire. The forgery even misled Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo’s partner, who reposted it and wrote, “Wow! See how the next generation is being educated,” before deleting the post once she realized it was false. The Athletic argued the episode showed the destructive effect of social media, insisting the Portugal camp was not at fault and that a misread quote plus a fabricated post created an unnecessary crisis during the tournament. It also noted that Francisco Conceicao had recently said, “We have no obligation to pass to Ronaldo,” only for that to be framed negatively in some reports despite his later praise of the player.
