Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Congo has deepened an unexpected crisis around the national team, with fresh debate over Cristiano Ronaldo’s status under coach Roberto Martinez. The Seleção had been widely tipped to go far, but the draw intensified questions about the star’s role inside the squad and his relationship with the manager.
The criticism landed on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder João Neves, who was asked about Ronaldo after the match. Neves said, “We know what Cristiano has done for us, for the national team and for world football, but right now, he and we know that he is no different from anyone else. He is another player here to help, and there is no difference between him and others. He is here to contribute, like all of us.”
Because of Ronaldo’s huge popularity, the remarks triggered angry reactions online. One fan told Neves to “show some respect,” while another wrote that Ronaldo has “bled for the team since 2004,” calling him “your captain, your legend,” and saying the players should fight for him, or else they are not worthy of playing beside him.
Bruno Fernandes publicly backed Neves, signaling support for his teammate on one of Neves’s social media posts. The Ronaldo issue continues to overshadow Portugal as it prepares for Tuesday’s match against Uzbekistan, a game it must win to stay in contention for progression to the next stage of the tournament.
