Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Congo has triggered an unexpected crisis around Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in the national team, even as the squad had been widely viewed as a side capable of going far. The discussion has intensified not only inside the team and around coach Roberto Martinez, but also among fans of the 40-year-old star.
The backlash focused on Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Joao Neves, who was asked after the match about Ronaldo’s status. Neves said: “We know what Cristiano has done for us, for the national team and for the world of football, but right now he and we know he is no different from anyone else. He is just another player here to help, and there is no difference between him and the others. He is here to contribute, like all of us.”
His comments drew angry reactions online from Ronaldo supporters. One fan wrote, “Show some respect,” while another said Neves should understand who Ronaldo is, calling him a player who has “bled for the team since 2004” and describing him as the team captain and legend. That fan added that if the squad is not willing to “die on the pitch” for him, they do not deserve to play alongside him.
Bruno Fernandes publicly backed Neves by reacting in support to one of the midfielder’s social media posts. The Ronaldo issue continues to hang over Portugal as it prepares for Tuesday’s match against Uzbekistan, which it must win to stay in contention for advancement to the next stage of the 2026 World Cup.
