Kevin Garnett said he wants to work with Victor Wembanyama and help the San Antonio Spurs star prepare for next season. Speaking on his podcast with Paul Pierce, the former NBA champion and MVP said Wembanyama should focus on strengthening his core, which he called the most important area for improvement.
Garnett said, “I think he needs to work on his core strength. That is the most important emphasis. When I had to get the ball and move it under the basket, I was the best at that. I would love to work with him, but this generation has a different way of doing things.” He added that he sees similarities between himself and the French big man.
Garnett, who was relatively slender himself but thrived in a more physical NBA, previously held a workshop for Wembanyama. This time, he offered to coach him over a longer period during the coming summer. Wembanyama has said he wants to improve his passing, and last summer he trained intensely, including spending an extended period at a kung fu monastery.
Wembanyama, last season’s Defensive Player of the Year, led San Antonio to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Spurs then lost 4:1 to the New York Knicks in the first round.
