Former US Vice President Kamala Harris drew ridicule online after giving an unusual, winding explanation of the meaning of “hope” in an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon. Harris, described in the article as the Democratic presidential candidate for 2028, said, “The truth is I believe each of us has light within us, and we have to know that this is what awakens our hope no less than anything external.”
She added that a defeat in elections, or a particular person, should not be allowed to “dim that light,” and that it should guide people “in moments of darkness.” Harris then said it is important not only to have hope, but to understand that “hope must be a verb.”
Her remarks quickly triggered mocking responses on social media. One user called it a “word salad answer” that could be summed up in two words, “stay positive.” Another joked, “When the teacher asked for a 300-word essay but you only had 100.”
Asked whether she would run again for president in 2028, Harris replied, “Honestly, I still haven’t decided.” She also said voters want “a leader who is willing to take risks and not just do what is popular,” and leaders who “look first at the people and not at themselves in the mirror.”
