Brazil’s quiet early hours were jolted at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday when millions of phones suddenly sounded emergency alerts. The false messages reached devices in seven states and woke residents in Brasília and other cities, turning the country’s night into a nationwide scare.
The alert text was bizarre, warning of an “alien attack” and telling people, “Humans, we have arrived,” along with instructions to protect themselves. The messages were sent through Brazil’s national emergency alert system, Defesa Civil Alerta, which is designed to push Cell Broadcast notices to all phones in a target area without requiring internet access.
Authorities soon said the system had been breached from outside. According to initial assessments, an unidentified actor gained remote access and used the platform to send fake emergency messages. The incident forced officials to shut the system down immediately.
Brazil’s federal police have opened an investigation into the attack, which is being treated as suspected unauthorized access to computer systems and disruption of a public service. Officials are now trying to calm the public after what became a striking example of how a single phone alert can unsettle an entire country.
