The IDF on Thursday published a map of the security belt Israel has established in Lebanon, showing areas it holds north and west of the Litani River. Most of the current fighting is concentrated there, especially around the Beaufort Ridge and Ali Taher Ridge, where most recent incidents have taken place. Overnight, the two most serious incidents were near the village of Tebnit, north of the ridge overlooking Nabatieh.
The area is described as the nerve center of Hezbollah’s Badr sector, the unit operating north of the Litani. The IDF has exposed layer after layer of underground tunnels used by Hezbollah fighters for shelter and command. Although the area is only about 10 kilometers northwest of Metula and has clear tactical value, the report says drone warfare means controlling it does not determine the security of northern Israel.
Even so, continued Israeli presence on the ridge could disrupt negotiations between the United States and Iran, meaning the end of this campaign may be decided in Washington rather than in Lebanon. CNN reported earlier that Iran is seeking guarantees that the war in Lebanon will end as a condition for continuing talks with the United States. A diplomatic source said mediators are trying to resolve the issue and that the planned talks in Switzerland have been postponed.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said overnight that “any violation of the agreement or excessive demands will be met with a harsh response,” and later added that talks with the US will remain subject to Tehran’s “red lines.” Earlier, Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry said the US-Iran talks were not taking place in Geneva as planned after the Iranian delegation canceled, citing “the Israeli attacks in Lebanon.” The White House later said Vice President JD Vance would not travel to Switzerland, adding that the technical talks were not finalized and that logistics had never been simple or predictable.
The Iranian notice came amid an escalation in Lebanon and intensified Israeli strikes on Hezbollah over repeated ceasefire violations. Just after midnight, four IDF soldiers were killed when a suspected aerial target hit a tank in southern Lebanon, including 52nd Armored Battalion commander Lt. Col. Dor Ben Shimon; the names of three others remain unpublished. Hours later, a reserve officer was seriously wounded by an explosive drone strike, and four warrant officers were lightly injured. In response, the IDF struck many Hezbollah targets overnight and into the morning in the Bekaa, Nabatieh and other areas in southern Lebanon, saying it hit more than 80 command posts, launch positions and terrorist infrastructure and killed dozens of militants operating there.
