Haiti is back at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, and one of its most surprising squad members is Wodensky Pierre, the only player selected from the domestic league. The defensive midfielder, who plays for Violette AC, was called up after appearing in a March friendly against Iceland, and coach Sebastien Migne still chose him for the 2026 tournament despite a recent injury. He may even get minutes against Brazil, after remaining on the bench against Scotland.
Pierre’s path is unusual even by Haiti’s standards. He grew up in Cite Soleil, a neighborhood long controlled by gangs, and was only three when UN armed forces tried to restore order in 2007. After the 2010 earthquake, it took two weeks for aid forces to reach the area, and thousands died. Prisoners escaped during the chaos, crime surged, and police even told residents to take the law into their own hands.
Despite that environment, Pierre rose through Violette’s youth system, played for Haiti’s Under-20 side while three years younger than many teammates, then moved to Real Hope at 19, won one title there, and returned to Violette to lead it to another championship in Port-au-Prince. He became captain at 21 and has been praised for work rate, passing, consistency, and leadership. Local media say his call-up is an inspiration for Haiti’s battered domestic game, with one outlet noting he is the only local player among 25 foreign-based teammates.
His World Cup journey was nearly derailed by U.S. visa problems. American authorities initially refused him entry, saying they were unsure he was a professional player, while Donald Trump’s restrictions on Haitian entry also affected 12 members of the delegation before matches in Boston, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. Pierre eventually received clearance after training alone in Port-au-Prince for the tournament. Haiti officials now hope the 21-year-old can use the World Cup to secure a professional contract abroad, with spokesman Theo Genty saying, “I hope for him that he will not have to live in Haiti after the World Cup.”
