Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s new video, "Restoring Hope," is continuing to stir political and media debate in Israel, while reopening discussion of ethnic tensions. The clip has drawn criticism from journalist and commentator Dr. Avishai Ben Haim, who said Bennett’s messaging toward Mizrahi audiences relies on outdated stereotypes.
Ben Haim argued during a broadcast that whenever Bennett addresses the Mizrahi issue, it feels like going back to a 1950s-era film about the kibbutz and the ma'abara, the transit camps for new immigrants. "You feel uncomfortable," he said, describing Bennett’s campaign approach as out of step with the present.
At the same time, Ben Haim stressed that in his view Bennett is not expressing direct hostility toward Mizrahim. Still, he sharply criticized what he called Bennett’s condescending attitude, saying, "He does not hate Mizrahim, but he loves them as a grocery-store owner, a taxi driver."
