A large, illuminated anti-Trump billboard went up Monday night in Monsey, New York, amid intense anger in U.S. Orthodox Jewish communities over the American administration’s expected deal with Tehran. The sign was placed on Route 59, directly across from Evergreen Kosher Market, a major kosher supermarket and community hub that serves thousands of shoppers each day.
The billboard, written in Yiddish, said, “Trump iz a ferd,” a phrase rendered loosely as “Trump is a donkey” or “Trump is a horse.” Passersby and customers leaving the store were stunned by the message, which was visible from a distance and quickly drew attention in the neighborhood.
Local residents said the display reflected deep frustration and pain over what they see as Washington’s abandonment of Israel’s security. One Monsey community activist told Kikar HaShabbat, “People here are just boiling. Most of the Orthodox street here always supported Trump and saw him as a great friend, but his recent moves and his surrender deal with the Iranians, along with his statements, just broke the rules.”
The activist added that the sign outside Evergreen reflects what many people in the community think privately, but had not expressed publicly. Within minutes, the billboard became a local and online talking point, with many people coming to the site to photograph the unusual political protest.
