Spanish far-left European Parliament member Irene Montero launched a sharp attack on EU foreign policy during a debate in Brussels, criticizing Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas and accusing the European Union of failing to sever ties with Israel. Montero, from Spain’s left-wing Podemos party, said Europe had failed to stop humanitarian crises and conflicts in the Middle East, including Gaza, tensions over Iran, and the fighting in Lebanon.
During the discussion about a peace agreement announced between the United States and Iran, Montero asked what Europe had to celebrate. She said, “Iran is celebrating its victory,” and described Donald Trump as celebrating his 80th birthday by building “his own Roman empire,” with “his gladiators” fighting each other.
She then asked whether Europe could celebrate stopping genocide, halting what she called illegal aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, cutting ties with Israel, or ending the occupation of Lebanon. “No, we cannot celebrate any of those things,” she said.
Montero then turned directly to Kallas, who was in the chamber, asking what she was celebrating and whether it was Trump’s birthday. She broke into an English version of “Happy Birthday,” repeatedly singing “Happy birthday to Trump” and “Happy birthday, Mr. Genocide.” She later posted the video on X, referring to Trump’s birthday on June 14. The unusual protest drew wide attention.
