Spanish MEP Irene Montero of the far-left Podemos launched a sharp attack on EU foreign policy during a European Parliament debate. She mocked EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and accused the bloc of failing to sever ties with Israel, amid debates over Gaza, tensions with Iran, and fighting in Lebanon.
Montero asked whether Europe had done anything to stop what she called humanitarian crises and conflict in the Middle East. She said the EU had failed “in disconnecting relations with Israel,” and questioned: “What exactly is there for Europe to celebrate?”
In remarks about the announced peace agreement between the United States and Iran, Montero said Europe could not celebrate because “we prevented genocide” was not true. She then asked whether Europe had stopped “illegal aggression” by the United States and Israel against Iran, whether it had cut ties with Israel, and whether it had stopped “the occupation of Lebanon.” She answered each question herself: “No, we cannot celebrate any of these things.”
Montero then turned directly to Kallas, who was present in the chamber, and said, “What are you celebrating, Ms. Kallas? Are you celebrating Donald Trump’s birthday? Then let’s sing to him.” She sang a modified version of “Happy Birthday,” repeatedly using the phrases “Happy birthday to Trump” and “Happy birthday, Mr. Genocide.” Montero later posted the video on X, under the title “Happy birthday to Trump,” referring to Trump’s 80th birthday on June 14.
