Germany has positioned two naval vessels in the Red Sea as part of preparations for a possible military operation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. He said any future German military steps would depend on how talks between the United States and Iran develop.
Pistorius also said that any action requiring the clearing of naval mines in the area would be carried out only with the approval of both Iran and Oman. The comments point to Germany preparing for contingencies while stressing that any mission in the strategic waterway would require regional consent and remain tied to the diplomatic track.
The statement did not specify when the ships were deployed or whether Germany has decided to proceed with an operation. It indicates, however, that Berlin is actively planning for scenarios connected to heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
