Lakefront Idaho Home Built on a Rock Hits Market for $9.49 Million

A one-of-a-kind luxury home on the shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho is up for sale, with an asking price of $9.49 million. Known as “House on the Rock,” the roughly 203-square-meter property was built directly on a large natural rock that juts into the water, giving it panoramic views from three sides.

The modern home uses floor-to-ceiling glass walls to create the feeling of living almost inside the lake itself. The listing includes three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and the property also has recent infrastructure upgrades, including a connection to the area’s main sewage system. According to the broker, the experience inside is like being on a perfectly stable boat. “It’s simply the best waterfront view I have ever seen,” she said, adding, “It’s such a different feeling. It’s so hard to explain until you actually experience it.”

The grounds cover about 3.5 dunams and include roughly 97 meters of private waterfront and a dock for boats. There are also small guest cabins with glass walls that provide additional water views. The structure is anchored directly to the rock, which engineers say makes the unusual lakeside location stable despite its setting over the water.

The land itself has a long history dating back to the late 19th century, when a military outpost was established on the lakeshore. At the time, the rock served as a social gathering point for soldiers who came from the nearby base to boat, dance, and meet there. After the outpost was dismantled in the early 20th century, the site later became a youth camp before being bought by the developer who built the current house in the 1970s. The home had been listed for sale years ago at $2 million, and buyers who purchase it also get membership in a local golf club.
