A distinctive luxury home on the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho is for sale for $9.49 million. Known as “House on the Rock,” the property was built directly on top of a large natural boulder that juts into the water, and its floor-to-ceiling glass walls give it panoramic views from three sides.
The house is about 203 square meters and has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The listing says the design is meant to blur the line between indoors and the lake itself, with water surrounding the structure on three sides. The broker described the feeling inside as like being on a completely steady boat, saying, “It’s simply the best waterfront view I’ve ever seen. It’s so hard to explain until you experience it.”
The home was put on the market in late May, and it is not the first time it has been offered for sale. It previously came up for about $2 million. The current estate sits on roughly 3.5 dunams, with about 97 meters of private waterfront and an attached boat dock. It also includes small guest cabins with glass walls and has been connected in recent years to the local sewer system.
The site has a long history. In the late 19th century, a military post stood nearby on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, and the boulder later served as a gathering spot where soldiers would arrive by boat and hold dances and social events. After the post was dismantled in the early 20th century, the area became a youth camp before a developer bought it and built the house in the 1970s. The purchase also includes membership in a nearby private golf club.
