Veteran broadcaster Avi Gilad had an unusually candid moment on television when he admitted live that he had been mistaken and did not try to deflect blame onto others. The exchange happened during a studio conversation with his co-host, Yair Sherki, as Gilad spoke about the difficult feelings he has recently been experiencing amid Israel’s political reality.
Gilad said that in the past he tended to believe and hope for the best, but that reality had since disappointed him. Sherki pressed him to clarify who he meant, asking, “Is this about Bibi or Trump?” Gilad replied that he was first referring to Donald Trump, then added, “and sometimes even for moments, Bibi too.”
He explained that he had been projecting his own “wishful thinking” and hopeful expectations onto reality. Sherki then teased him by suggesting the standard public response, saying he could now do what many people do and claim that the others were wrong. Gilad laughed and answered plainly, “I was wrong.” Sherki closed the exchange with a smile, saying, “Your apology here will be accepted.”
