Yisrael! party leader Gadi Eizenkot attacked the Knesset plenum’s decision on Wednesday to grant immunity to MK Tali Gottlieb. He said it is unacceptable for elected officials to endanger Israel’s security and then use parliamentary immunity as a “safe haven” from the law.
In a statement, Eizenkot said this is “a spit in the face” of soldiers and security personnel, including Israelis who voted for Likud and other coalition parties in the last election. He argued that Netanyahu had personally worked to bring into the current Knesset people on the Likud list who, in his words, have nothing in common with “statehood, liberalism and patriotism.”
Eizenkot placed responsibility on the prime minister and the Likud MKs who, he said, again chose political interests over the public interest. He said his camp will continue working to bring “worthy leaders” into the next Knesset, public servants who will honor state employees rather than turn parliament into a shelter at the country’s expense. He ended by saying, “Israel’s security comes before every party interest.”
