Hapoel Jerusalem is continuing to build its roster for next season and has identified a major target for the frontcourt: Mady Sissoko, the 2.06-meter center of Real Madrid. Israeli outlet Israel Hayom reported that the Malian big man is on the club’s radar as Jerusalem looks to strengthen its paint presence.
The team is undergoing a professional reset under coach Sasha Obradovic, and it is working to add several new foreign players. Alongside the expected signing of Jalen Smith, who has already agreed to a two-year contract with an option for a third season, Jerusalem is also seeking a significant inside presence. Sissoko is viewed as the leading candidate to replace Austin Wiley at center.
Jerusalem believes Sissoko’s defensive ability, back-to-the-basket game and shot-blocking could fit the rebuilt roster. At this stage, most of the foreign players are expected to leave, with Jared Harper the only one currently projected to stay.
Sissoko spent most of last season with Italian club Trieste, where he impressed in domestic league play and in the FIBA Champions League. He later joined Real Madrid, adding experience at the highest levels of European basketball. The move would not be simple, however, because several other EuroLeague teams have already shown interest, creating likely summer competition for his signature. Another name offered to Jerusalem is Luka Samanic, the Croatian center from Zenit St. Petersburg, who has a résumé that includes both EuroLeague and NBA appearances and is among the options under consideration.
