Spanish Community Rabbis in Bnei Brak Convene on Technology Dangers

Rabbis from Spanish communities in Bnei Brak held an emergency meeting this week to discuss the dangers of modern technology. The gathering, led by Chief Rabbi Masoud Ben Shimon, focused on strategies to combat the "curses of technology" ahead of a planned communal warning this coming Shabbat.

During the meeting, Rabbi Ben Shimon highlighted the severe issues reaching his office daily, emphasizing that an annual warning is insufficient given the gravity of the situation. He stated that the current challenges posed by technology are a matter of "saving a life," making proactive engagement a religious obligation.

The rabbis shared coping mechanisms and stressed the need for clear guidelines and technical information for the public. They resolved that a weekly professional team meeting would be held by the "Lakadeshno" organization, headed by prominent rabbis, to provide solutions and guidance on complex technological issues. Additionally, community rabbis will appoint local representatives who will undergo technical training by "Lakadeshno" to offer initial support to congregants.

Decisions made included addressing public displays and maintaining the sanctity of synagogues according to tradition, respecting public sentiment without exceptions. The rabbis also cautioned against individuals making their own halachic rulings regarding technology, stressing that such matters require consultation with authorized experts or advice centers. Updated information on practical safeguards and workplace rules was distributed to the rabbis at the event's conclusion.
