Argentina's President Escalates Falklands Dispute, Targets Oil Projects

Argentine President Javier Milei has intensified his country's sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas Islands. Milei asserted that the islands are historically and legally Argentine, claiming Britain's 1833 seizure was an illegal colonial act. He argued that the islands' current population, settled on land taken from Argentina, lacks the right to self-determination, rendering any referendums invalid.

Milei stated that Argentina will prohibit companies involved in projects on the islands, without Argentine approval, from operating within Argentina. He presented this as a choice between illegal activity in a disputed territory or profitable, secure operations in a sovereign nation with clear rules. "Those who operate on our islands behind the back of the Argentine government will have to choose between an illegal venture in a disputed territory or profitable and safe activity in a sovereign country," Milei declared.

The president specifically targeted the Sea Lion oil project near the Falklands, estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil. This project is being developed by the British company Rockhopper Exploration and the Israeli firm Navitas Petroleum. Argentina views this project as a direct threat to its sovereignty claim.

Milei also criticized Britain's position, noting the islands' proximity to Argentina (about 500 km) compared to Britain (over 12,000 km). He drew a parallel between Britain's stance on the Falklands and its calls for sanctions against Israeli settlements in the West Bank, labeling the former as hypocrisy.
