Mossad Chief Orders Senior Officer's Departure Amid 7/10 Fallout

The head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, Roman Gofman, has decided that Brigadier General (res.) "G" will leave his position within the organization and will no longer serve in the Israeli security establishment. G, formerly the head of the Operations Division in Military Intelligence (Aman) during the October 7th Hamas attack, was "loaned" to the Mossad after his career in the IDF stalled due to his role in the failures leading up to the massacre.

G's tenure at the Mossad was set to end in approximately two months, a decision previously made in November by then-IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi and former Mossad chief David Barnea. G had attempted to secure a senior role in Unit 8200 but was unsuccessful, leading to his temporary assignment at the Mossad.

The decision comes after concerns arose regarding the relationship between Gofman and G. Just over three months ago, Gofman's appointment as Mossad chief was contingent on G submitting an affidavit to the Supreme Court. G provided testimony that fully supported Gofman's account concerning his involvement in the interrogation of a teenager named Uri Almakiess, thereby paving the way for Gofman's confirmation.

Despite the prior agreement for G's departure, Gofman initially sought to retain him. He independently contacted retired Major General Sami Turgeman, who led the IDF's inquiries into the October 7th failures, to seek his opinion on G. Turgeman expressed surprise at the inquiry, noting that G's departure was already settled and stating that while he didn't dismiss G, "his responsibility for the failure cannot be downplayed."

During a meeting earlier this week, Gofman informed G that his loan period would not be extended, confirming his exit from the security services. This action appears to address concerns that Gofman might "repay" G for the affidavit that facilitated his own appointment.
