Mossad Chief Rejects Senior Role for IDF Officer Involved in Controversial Case
Mossad Chief David Barnea has decided not to grant a senior position within the intelligence agency to Brigadier General G., who was previously the head of the Operations Division in the IDF's Intelligence Directorate (Aman) on October 7th. Brigadier General G. was reportedly loaned to the Mossad from the IDF after the Chief of Staff decided he would not continue in his previous role. He had hoped to be hired as a senior employee within the Mossad.
According to a report by Omri Maniv on Channel 12 News, a key factor in the decision may have been related to a sworn affidavit submitted to the High Court of Justice concerning the handling of the case of a young man named Uri Almakiess. While some speculated that Barnea might "reward" Brigadier General G. for his role in the affidavit, the decision indicates the opposite.
Brigadier General G. had submitted a confidential affidavit to the High Court in response to a petition against the appointment of Major General Roman Gofman (the article incorrectly states Gofman is the Mossad chief, Barnea is) to a senior position. In his affidavit, Brigadier General G. stated that since 2022, he had not discussed the Almakiess case with Gofman in any way. He also emphasized that he had not discussed Gofman's future at the Mossad with him. "I did not ask and did not initiate contact with Major General Gofman regarding my future at the Mossad, directly or indirectly," the Brigadier General declared.
Furthermore, Brigadier General G. addressed the Almakiess case, stating he had clarified to Gofman that he was not permitted to investigate or discuss the matter. "The division commander noted that he would want to examine the issue with his subordinates in order to provide a definitive answer," Brigadier General G. wrote in his affidavit. "However, following clarification at the beginning of the conversation and the instructions I received, it was made clear to him that this should not be done, as the investigation was ongoing and could be harmed."
