US Envoy Links Israel-Lebanon Progress to Hezbollah's Demise

U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Hammer, confirmed on Thursday that the release of five Lebanese detainees was a "goodwill gesture" as part of ongoing contacts between Israel and Lebanon. Hammer's statement followed a meeting with his U.S. counterpart in Lebanon, and he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host him. He described the agreement as a continuation of "historic progress" toward peace between the two nations, adding that this peace would improve significantly "the moment the Iranian puppet, Hezbollah, disappears."

The Prime Minister's Office announced that the release of the detainees was contingent on progress in locating and returning the remains of Jewish community leaders in Lebanon. These leaders were abducted and murdered by terror groups in the mid-1980s. The office stated that extensive efforts had been made by both Lebanon and Israel in recent months, including field operations, to find the remains.

In light of these significant efforts, Israel decided to release five Lebanese civilians who had been detained in areas controlled by the IDF in southern Lebanon. Prime Minister Netanyahu explained that investigations revealed the detainees were civilians not involved in terrorism and had no reason to be held further. He noted that he had been deeply involved in this issue since his tenure as Israel's ambassador to the UN, and the release was an expression of appreciation for the joint effort with Lebanon.
