Historic Document Reveals Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's Support for Hesder Yeshiva Soldiers

A newly revealed historical document sheds light on the positive stance of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, then Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, towards soldiers from Hesder Yeshivas during the First Lebanon War (Operation Peace for Galilee). The document records a discussion within the Chief Rabbinate Council on July 1, 1982, at the height of the conflict.

During the council meeting, which included prominent rabbis such as Avraham Shapira, Shlomo Goren, Shalom Meshass, Shaul Yisraeli, and Kafah, the question of postponing the rabbinical examinations due to the war was debated. Rabbi Yosef, observing that many students from Hesder Yeshivas had been drafted to fight and were risking their lives, proposed delaying the examinations.

"Since there are students from Hesder Yeshivas drafted into the war and giving their lives, therefore, in my opinion, the rabbinical examinations should be postponed until Cheshvan," Rabbi Yosef stated, as documented in the text.
