Hebrew Language Academy Declares Common Word Non-Standard

The Academy of the Hebrew Language has officially stated that the commonly used word 'zoti' (זאתי), often employed in spoken Hebrew, is not standard. While widely used in everyday conversation, such as in phrases like 'that one over there' or 'this shirt,' the Academy clarifies that 'zoti' is grammatically incorrect in standard Hebrew.

The Academy explains that 'zoti' likely originated from a combination of 'zot' (זאת, meaning 'this' or 'that') and 'hi' (היא, meaning 'she' or 'it'). However, its current usage often includes 'hi' unnecessarily, as in 'the girl zoti' or 'the shirt zoti.'

To speak standard Hebrew, the Academy recommends using either 'zot' (הזאת), which is characteristic of biblical Hebrew, or 'zo' (הזו), common in Mishnaic Hebrew. Examples of correct usage include 'the girl zot' (הילדה הזאת) or 'the shirt zo' (החולצה הזו).
