Arab Local Authority Heads Urge Joint Election Pact to Boost Knesset Representation

The National Committee of Heads of Arab Local Authorities in Israel called on Thursday for the "Joint List" (comprising Hadash, Ta'al, and the National Democratic Assembly) and the "United Arab List" (Ra'am) to sign a surplus vote agreement. The committee stated the aim is to preserve voter ballots and enhance the chances of increasing Arab representation in the Knesset, Israel's parliament.

In a statement, the committee emphasized its responsibility to the Arab community and its commitment to preventing wasted votes, especially after efforts to form a single, unified Arab list for the upcoming elections failed. The committee highlighted that current political circumstances and what it described as "racist practices" by the government necessitate focusing on achievable, agreed-upon issues, foremost among them a surplus vote agreement.

Such an agreement, the committee believes, would bolster Arab political representation and increase their influence within the legislative body. Additionally, the committee urged both lists to adopt an electoral code of honor. This code would ensure a responsible campaign that respects political diversity and differences, refrains from accusations and incitement, and prioritizes the collective interest of the Arab community over partisan calculations and electoral competition.
