Arab Local Leaders Urge Vote-Sharing Pact Amid Joint List Failure
The National Committee of Heads of Arab Local Authorities in Israel issued a statement on Thursday calling on the two main Arab political alliances, the three-way "Joint List" (comprising Hadash, Ta'al, and the National Democratic Alliance) and the United Arab List (Ra'am), to sign a surplus vote agreement. The committee stated that after the failure to form a single, unified Arab list for the upcoming elections, and in light of "exceptional circumstances and the racist practices of the current government," it is imperative for all parties to pursue achievable goals. A surplus vote agreement, they argue, would prevent the loss of Arab votes and enhance Arab political representation and influence in the Knesset.
The committee also urged the two lists to agree on an electoral code of conduct. This code should ensure a responsible and ethical election campaign that respects political diversity and differences, refrains from accusations of treason, slander, and incitement, and prioritizes the community's general interest over partisan competition.
