Settler Attacks Escalate in West Bank, Targeting Villages and Livelihoods

Settler intrusions and assaults on Palestinian villages in the West Bank are escalating, with incidents including shootings, livestock theft, and land seizures. Human rights organization B'Tselem warns of increased displacement and loss of livelihoods for Palestinians. Karim Jabran, B'Tselem's field research director, described the village of Al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, as a clear example of a broader policy targeting Palestinian presence, citing official inaction and international silence.

Al-Mughayyir faces near-daily attacks, including blockades and restrictions on movement, alongside the seizure of agricultural lands. Entering and exiting the village has become perilous, with repeated attacks on property and livelihoods. Settlers are stealing livestock, causing farmers to lose hundreds of animals due to grazing restrictions and land confiscation. Jabran emphasized that these attacks are not isolated but part of a wider trend across the West Bank, with a recent focus on Palestinian villages.

While past years saw pressure concentrated on Bedouin communities, with over 66 such communities displaced since October 7th, the focus has now shifted to villages. These attacks include land appropriation, home assaults, and movement restrictions. Al-Mughayyir has become emblematic of this phase, with residents and farmers prevented from accessing their land or working normally.

The targeting of livestock is intrinsically linked to land pressure, as animal husbandry is a primary income source for many villages. Farmers losing grazing areas or facing danger are forced to sell their animals. Preventing access to land gradually weakens Palestinians' ability to remain, exemplified by the uprooting of ancient olive trees.

Jabran accused the Israeli military and police of failing to protect Palestinians, alleging that settler groups receive support and protection. He stated that Israeli forces often intervene against Palestinians by shooting, arresting, or blocking roads instead of preventing attacks and holding perpetrators accountable. He believes security forces have the capacity to stop these assaults if there is political will.

Despite global awareness of the situation, Jabran criticized the weak international political response, attributing it to a lack of practical accountability measures and political cowardice. He also noted the absence of effective Arab and Islamic action, suggesting that coordinated efforts could have provided greater protection for Palestinian civilians. Human rights organizations continue to document these events and share information internationally, urging action to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable, which he stressed is a legal and moral responsibility.
