Grief-Stricken Son's Plea Dominates Funeral of Rabbi Israel Meir Yosef Padida

Thousands of mourners attended the funeral of Rabbi Israel Meir Yosef Padida, the Mashgiach (spiritual supervisor) of the 'Or Gaon' yeshiva in Bnei Brak, who passed away after a prolonged illness. The funeral was marked by deeply emotional moments, particularly when Rabbi Padida's only son, Yonatan, delivered a tearful eulogy. He cried out to his father, "Don't leave us alone!" and expressed the difficulty of speaking about him in the past tense.

Yonatan revealed his father's dying wish for a swift, unadorned funeral, avoiding lengthy eulogies and praise, except for one specific point. He shared that his father, who he described as always seeing the good in everything with faith and recognition, had a profound connection to God. The son recounted his father's life motto of "benefiting the public" (Zikui Harabim), emphasizing that Rabbi Padida prioritized this mission above his own comfort, even when exhausted.

Further insights from Rabbi Padida's will were shared, including his directive not to mention words like suffering, illness, or pain, as believers should not associate such terms with God's actions. He expressed his departure with complete joy, viewing it as the natural end for everyone and feeling he had been a devoted messenger for many students. He also requested that attendees ask for his forgiveness.

The son, on behalf of the family and the assembled crowd, asked for forgiveness from the deceased, with the crowd responding three times, "You are forgiven." Yonatan concluded his eulogy by asking his father to be an advocate in the afterlife, as promised in his will, and reiterated his plea, "Father, don't leave us alone."

The funeral procession proceeded from Rabbi Padida's home to the cemetery of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, where he was laid to rest.
