US Signals Iran New Red Line on Energy Infrastructure

The United States has signaled a significant shift in its strategy towards Iran, expanding the scope of potential targets to include the country's energy and oil infrastructure for the first time. This move, aimed at deterring further escalation, suggests that Tehran's energy sector is no longer considered off-limits.

According to Channel 14, this warning was conveyed to Iran, partly through Qatar, following a U.S. strike on two Iranian oil tankers. Previously, U.S. actions in the current confrontation primarily focused on military targets. The new approach indicates that further Iranian actions could lead to strikes on strategic infrastructure, potentially including sensitive sites like Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iranian oil exports.

Such a scenario could significantly increase the economic cost of the conflict for Iran, as targeting its oil sector directly impacts a vital source of foreign currency. This is seen as potentially more damaging than strikes on individual military installations.
