Israeli Beverage Giant to Lay Off 20% of Factory Workers

Central Bottling Company (CBC), a major Israeli beverage producer, is planning to lay off approximately 60 out of 300 employees at its Gath Foods plant in Emek Hefer. This represents about 20% of the production staff. The decision comes amid a strengthening Israeli shekel and a declining dollar, which have significantly reduced the export profitability of the plant, specializing in producing concentrates and bases for global beverage companies.

Approximately 90% of Gath Foods' output is destined for international markets. The erosion of profits due to unfavorable exchange rates has compelled the company's management to implement immediate structural adjustments. The National Labor Federation and the workers' committee have declared a labor dispute in response to the planned layoffs and have initiated mediation proceedings.

During the negotiations, various alternatives to reduce the number of layoffs are being explored. These include integrating affected employees into other companies within the CBC group or developing retirement packages. The goal is to prevent industrial action and disruptions to production and marketing operations.

The workers' committee expressed concern that the layoffs might be the first step toward closing production lines in Israel and relocating them abroad. They stated their commitment to ensuring financial security for all employees. CBC, however, explained that Gath Foods is forced to scale back its export operations from Israel due to economic non-viability, citing local production costs and currency trends as the primary reasons.
