Iran President: US Must Return to Commitments for Tehran to Comply

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated Tuesday at the SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan that Iran would return to its commitments under a June memorandum of understanding if the United States does the same. This statement follows threats from US President Donald Trump, who vowed a strong response to an Iranian missile attack on American bases in Jordan. Trump also indicated a possibility for talks, though he expressed skepticism about reaching an agreement, attributing Iran's willingness to meet to the impact of sanctions.

Despite the exchange, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that the confrontation with the US remains limited, adding that Iran would respond severely if attacked. The UK's Maritime Trade Operations reported an oil tanker was struck by three Iranian surface-to-surface missiles while exiting the Strait of Hormuz. This incident occurred after the US military attacked Iran's Larrak Island in the Strait, which Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed was an act of aggression and that their air defenses shot down a US MQ-9 drone. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) refuted Iran's claim, stating the strike was precise and targeted mines that posed an immediate threat, neutralizing the danger Iran had created.

Jordanian authorities reported successfully intercepting eight missiles that entered their airspace, neutralizing them before they posed a threat. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott stated that the US would impose secondary sanctions on Iran this week, targeting banks that cooperate with the Iranian regime, with further sanctions to follow weekly. He noted that existing sanctions have reduced Iran's oil exports to China and emphasized the need to target Chinese companies involved in such trade.

Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, tweeted a message to Muslim leaders, particularly those in Gulf states, urging them to identify their true enemies and resist their plots. He accused the US and Israel of harboring animosity towards the Islamic nation, stating that even allied leaders are not exempt from this enmity.
