Israel Receives Sixth German-Built Submarine, INS Drakon

The INS Drakon, Israel's sixth submarine and the third and final vessel of the Dolphin AIP class, has departed Germany for Israel, with its arrival expected in the coming weeks. The departure ceremony took place this week at the TKMS shipyard in Kiel, Germany, marking a significant milestone in a 14-year procurement project.

The INS Drakon is equipped with advanced technologies intended to enhance the Israeli Navy's operational flexibility and technological edge. Its arrival is being hailed as a historic event by the Israeli Navy, which states the submarine will provide unprecedented capabilities.

The submarine's departure on September 1st was symbolically timed, coinciding with the 87th anniversary of the start of World War II. The ceremony in Germany was attended by senior Israeli defense officials, including Navy Commander Maj. Gen. Eyal Harel, and German naval representatives.

Maj. Gen. Harel stated that the INS Drakon, along with three incoming Dakar-class submarines, will form the core of the future Israeli submarine fleet, offering enhanced capabilities, range, and operational power. He emphasized the elite nature of the submariners who operate in secrecy and bear significant responsibility.

Director of Defense Procurement at the Ministry of Defense, Zeev Landman, highlighted the strategic partnership between Israel and Germany, noting shared values and technological prowess. He indicated that discussions are underway for future collaborative projects in defense resilience and joint development.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the complex program, underscoring the trust and expertise involved. He affirmed TKMS's commitment to Israel as a key maritime partner and confirmed ongoing cooperation on the Dakar-class submarines.
