Germany Eyes $1 Billion Deal for Israeli LORA Ballistic Missiles

Germany is reportedly in advanced discussions to purchase the Israeli LORA ballistic missile system in a deal potentially worth up to one billion euros. This move comes amid growing concerns in Europe regarding potential conflict with Russia and follows a recent successful, though previously classified, test of the LORA missile by the German Navy in the North Atlantic Ocean. The test, conducted between Ireland and Iceland, was described by German Navy Commander Jan Christian Kaack as a significant achievement, marking "a new chapter in deterrence and maritime defense readiness."

The LORA (Long Range Attack) missile, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), has a range of up to 500 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighing between 440 and 600 kilograms. It is designed for precision strikes against strategic targets deep within enemy territory and can be launched from mobile or naval platforms. The system was previously sold to Azerbaijan and played a crucial role in its conflict with Armenia.

This potential acquisition highlights Germany's increased defense spending and strategic reorientation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It also marks a significant historical moment, as Germany, which developed the world's first ballistic missile 80 years ago, is now looking to Israel for such advanced weaponry. The deal would further solidify Germany's position as one of Israel's major defense trade partners, especially after the recent Arrow missile deal.

The LORA missile system is distinct from cruise missiles like Germany's Taurus, which are launched from aircraft and fly at low altitudes. LORA follows a steep, parabolic trajectory, reaching high altitudes before descending rapidly onto its target. IAI markets LORA as a tactical missile capable of destroying identified targets within ten minutes of launch.
