Israel Faces Multifaceted Threats, With Iran as Primary Strategic Concern

The Israeli military (IDF) maintains a high state of alert, viewing the current security situation as far from normal despite reduced fighting in some areas. The primary strategic threat remains Iran, with the IDF assessing that the direct confrontation with Tehran is ongoing and has fundamentally changed since April 2024, moving beyond proxy warfare to direct exchanges of fire. Israel is particularly concerned about Iran's ballistic missile program and its production capabilities, even after significant strikes on Iranian industry.

The IDF's defensive posture has evolved, with a shift towards establishing forward security zones in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and deeper operations in Judea and Samaria to keep threats away from Israeli settlements, a lesson learned from the October 7th attacks. In Lebanon, while the military situation has improved with reduced enemy infrastructure and operatives, Israel maintains operational freedom to prevent Hezbollah's resurgence.

Operations continue daily in the Gaza Strip to prevent the re-establishment of terror groups, with an average of two terrorists neutralized per day. In Judea and Samaria, the IDF is observing a warming trend and anticipates this arena will require increased operational attention. In Syria, the IDF views the country as militarily weakened but remains vigilant, also monitoring Turkish military presence as a potential concern.

Separately, the IDF reports a significant increase in Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) enlistment, with over 4,300 recruits in the past year, attributed to increased motivation post-war, expanded tailored programs, and enforcement measures. However, the IDF notes over 100,000 Haredim are still evading conscription, and the challenge lies in creating sufficient integration frameworks for new recruits.
