IDF Chief of Staff's Wife Resigns Amidst Conflict of Interest Criticism

Orna Zamir, wife of IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, has resigned from her position as an independent director at Tomer Food, following negative publicity surrounding her appointment. The criticism stemmed from the perception of a conflict of interest, as the IDF is a major client of Tomer Food.

Sources within the defense establishment stated that there were no private dealings between Tomer Food and the IDF or the Ministry of Defense during Zamir's tenure as Chief of Staff or as Director-General of the Ministry of Defense. They clarified that all dealings were won legally through tenders, with the lowest bid typically winning. Zamir's appointment to Tomer Food occurred approximately three months prior to her resignation, and her joining the company was incorporated into an updated conflict of interest agreement.

Tomer Food issued a statement expressing regret over Zamir's decision, attributing it to the media attention. The company stated it respects her decision and thanked her for her contributions. Zamir herself reportedly indicated that the ongoing discussion could harm the company's business operations, making her resignation a responsible step for the company's benefit.

Zamir, 57, was appointed to the board on May 19. She holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Tel Aviv University and a master's in business administration from ESG Paris. Her prior experience includes roles as a communications consultant, deputy director of development at Alin Beit Noam, deputy service commissioner for the Hod Hasharon Municipality, and a director at Hod Hasharon's water infrastructure company (Mei).
