India's Modi Meets Iran's President Amid Tensions

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. This marks the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders since the escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel in February.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They also addressed the sensitive security situation and the economic impact of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. sanctions.

Raisi stated that Tehran does not seek war but will respond decisively to aggression, a comment made amid heightened tensions following recent attacks in the Persian Gulf. He also highlighted the importance of "independent voices" on the global stage not beholden to the West and noted that regional instability affects all countries.

Modi's meeting with Raisi underscores India's effort to maintain its political autonomy while balancing its deep commitments to Israel and the United States with its economic interests concerning the Iran-Russia axis. India is a major importer of Israeli defense technology and maintains close intelligence cooperation with Israel on counter-terrorism efforts.

India's relationship with Israel extends beyond military ties to include significant economic initiatives, such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor project, and substantial investments in high-tech, agriculture, and energy sectors.
