Singer Ishay Ribo Canceled Shows Worth $1 Million on Rabbi's Advice

Israeli singer Ishay Ribo revealed that he canceled performances valued at a total of one million shekels following the advice of a rabbi. Ribo explained in an interview with Raz Shechnik in the newspaper Israel Hayom that the canceled shows involved a series of performances by male and female singers.

Ribo, who does not perform with women, stated that while productions had previously accommodated his preferences, he did not want to alter the nature of an existing event simply because he was participating. He felt that beyond his personal religious observance, he had a responsibility to his audience. The rabbi helped him understand that his participation could be perceived by his fans as an endorsement of performances that might not align with their values or comfort levels, thus giving a stamp of approval to things that are suitable for some audiences but not others. This insight helped him make a decision from a place of integrity.

He quoted the saying, "Get yourself a rabbi and remove yourself from doubt," explaining that entrusting a decision to a wise person one trusts can provide relief. Ribo acknowledged the cancellation was a test, involving potential exposure, recognition, and significant income that could boost an artist's career, but he believes that everything, including livelihood, comes from heaven.

Additionally, Ribo mentioned he has refused to judge on reality TV shows due to the issue of women singing, stating it would feel inappropriate to judge female singers when he himself does not perform with them.
