Israeli Singer Hadas Shimrling Rejects Major Contract for Religious Convictions

Hadas Shimrling, a secular Israeli musician from Jerusalem, initially pursued a promising career in music from a young age, attending the Academy of Music and serving with distinction in the IDF's military bands. After her discharge at 21, she released a critically acclaimed debut album and performed at various high-profile events, including the Jerusalem Film Festival and the President's Residence.

However, Shimrling's spiritual journey began to intensify, leading her to question her Jewish identity and purpose. This introspection culminated in a significant turning point in her life at age 22. After a meeting with her record label, she encountered Tzviya Shimrling, a religious man who would become her husband. Their relationship deepened, and Shimrling began to embrace religious observance, including keeping Shabbat.

This spiritual shift presented professional challenges. Shimrling was in negotiations for a lucrative 20-year contract with the prominent "Helicon" record label, which sought her as a specific type of artist. Despite attempts to find a compromise, such as performing in modest attire, the label's terms were too restrictive. Ultimately, Shimrling declined the contract, choosing to produce her second album independently with her husband.

Further solidifying her commitment, Shimrling made the halachic decision to perform exclusively for female audiences. She explains this choice as a way to create a purer artistic connection, free from the subconscious need to impress a mixed-gender audience. For the past 14 years, her primary focus has been raising her seven children, dedicating herself to motherhood while pursuing music "in between."

Now that her youngest child has started kindergarten, Shimrling is entering a "second phase" of her career. She has released new music, teaches vocal development and composition, performs original material, and has written a children's musical. She is also involved in a cultural incubator aimed at elevating children's performances in the religious sector. Reflecting on her choices, Shimrling states that while she sometimes fears divine judgment for potentially limiting her voice, she believes she made the right choice by adhering to her truth and building her family.
