Tel Aviv Expands High School Cell Phone Ban Following Positive Pilot Study

The Tel Aviv municipality announced on Monday that it will expand its ban on mobile phone use to all high schools in the city, following a successful pilot program. The city was the first in Israel to implement such a ban in its high schools.

Initial findings from a study on the program indicate a significant reduction in phone usage among students. In schools with the ban, a vast majority of students reported not using their phones at all, even during breaks. Researchers noted that the most pronounced impact was observed during recess. In schools without the ban, 79% of students used their phones moderately to frequently during breaks, compared to 74% in schools with the ban who reported using them rarely or not at all.

Teachers in the affected schools reported a significant improvement in student performance during lessons, as well as more positive social interactions among students during breaks. There is also an early indication of improved concentration, though researchers cautioned that it is too early to definitively attribute this improvement solely to the phone ban.

The study also found no significant increase in phone usage outside of school hours as a result of the ban. While there might be a slight increase after school, it does not compensate for the time students are phone-free during the school day.
