Israeli Experts Call for Community-Led Revolution to Combat Smartphone Addiction Among Children
Israeli educators and experts warn of the deep changes in childhood caused by early and uncontrolled smartphone use, linking it to declines in attention skills, rising anxiety and depression among teens, and deteriorating social abilities. They emphasize that the widespread acceptance of these harms as an inevitable trade-off for technological progress is a mistake. While regulation and legislation to protect minors in digital spaces are important, relying solely on government action is insufficient and often delayed.
The proposed solution centers on grassroots efforts involving communities, local authorities, schools, and parents to create broad social agreements that delay the age at which children receive their first smartphones and promote controlled usage habits. This approach aims to shift peer pressure so children do not feel isolated without devices. Starting prevention early in elementary schools, where norms are established and parents agree on smartphone policies, can significantly reduce the burden on teachers and foster healthier development.
In middle and high schools, where problematic habits are already entrenched, efforts focus on education, awareness, and enforcement. Over 150 schools in Israel have begun implementing these changes, which also redefine communication boundaries between parents and teachers, restoring teachers’ professional status and mental well-being.
