Rabbi Ariel Levi Defends Rabbi Dov Lior, Cites Esteem from Leading Sages

Rabbi Ariel Levi has publicly defended Rabbi Dov Lior, asserting that Lior is highly regarded by prominent rabbinical figures, including Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, and Rabbi Yaakov Yosef. Levi stated that those criticizing Lior do not hold a monopoly on Torah scholarship.

Levi recounted that Rabbi Elyashiv, after reviewing Lior's qualifications for rabbinical court service, wrote that Lior was "worthy of serving on the High Court of Appeals," despite being a young scholar at the time. This indicated Elyashiv's recognition of Lior's exceptional erudition. Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, when asked halachic questions, would often direct inquirers to Rabbi Lior, suggesting they ask him instead.

Furthermore, Levi mentioned witnessing Rabbi Ovadia Yosef show affection and esteem towards Rabbi Lior at a wedding. Rabbi Yaakov Yosef also held Rabbi Lior in high regard, referring to him as "our teacher and our rabbi" and frequently citing Lior's rulings in his own lectures.

Levi criticized the attacks on Rabbi Lior, characterizing them as stemming from a dismissive attitude towards anyone outside the critics' camp. He emphasized that Lior has many devoted students, including diligent Torah scholars who are also committed to settling the land of Israel, which he considers an integral part of Torah.

Levi concluded by stating that Rabbi Lior has never shown disrespect to other Torah scholars and often quotes Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Harlap on the importance of the Land of Israel. Levi and other students of Rabbi Lior pledge to continue following his teachings and disseminating them.
